I had a whole post planned to commemorate the fact that the Dallas Stars had the best penalty kill in the league this season, then I checked the stats this morning and saw, to my horror, that the San Jose Sharks passed us!
This is why I don’t do predictions! I usually know better than to count my chickens too early.
I’m convinced the Sharks gooned it up yesterday for the sole purpose of putting us on the power play for half the game.
They knew perfectly well that they could catch us and take that honor on the very last day. The last day! I’m very upset. I was all ready to take credit for the Stars’ Penalty Killing success, for obvious reasons.
In fact, my plan was to unveil the new title of the blog, “Playoff Wins,” in the hope that it would reverse-jinx them into leading the league in that category.
But no. Jody Shelley had to go and ruin it.

This totally bites! I think I wouldn’t know what to do if the Sabres had the best PK unit I’d be SO PROUD!
Still, Patty… Number two isn’t that shabby!
(Dear Buffalo,
SJ did NOT end up with the best PK unit because of Soupy. Don’t even.
Love,
Heather B.)
This is an OUTRAGE. I am so sorry the dastardly Sharks stole the title in such an underhanded way. I still think you can take a lot of credit for the PK, though. As Heather said, #2 is still way better than #s 3-30. If I weren’t already passionately cheering against the Sharks, this issue alone would have soured me against them. EW!
On the bright side, Patty, you can say we’ve consistently had the best penalty kill all year, instead of just in March. :D
Patty, I’m so glad to see you publicizing the dastardliness of the Sharks. They’re such a trendy pick these days, what with not being the Wings or the Ducks, but you’re performing a public good by exposing them for the underhanded, black-hearted, petty jerks they really are.
Thanks for all the support, y’all!
At least we got to hear Razor mention during games all year that we were the league’s best penalty kill. The Sharks never got to hear that.
You’re right, Heather B. and Katebits, having a great PK is still a huge accomplishment. Even if it was only #1 for 99.9% of the season.
And you make a good point, Caitlin. Plus, it took them racking up more than 100 penalty minutes to beat us by 0.3%.
They’re such a trendy pick these days, what with not being the Wings or the Ducks…
Now we find out they are the Wings or the Ducks. :P
Plus, it took them racking up more than 100 penalty minutes to beat us by 0.3%.
This is true! I think consistency is a lot better than having one “hot” month. :D
“I’m convinced the Sharks gooned it up yesterday for the sole purpose of putting us on the power play for half the game.”
AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! You know they did!
Seriously though, what are you implying? That Ott was an innocent bystander all night? Psh….Jody Shelley is certainly no angel, but Otter’s a dickhead too.
And hey, to all you new-found (and old-school) Sharks haters, they were back and forth in the #1 and #2 spot with Dallas for the entire season. Not just March. Dallas was usually in first but probably only about 75% of the year, definitely not 99.9%!!!
Patty, if it makes you feel any better, every MSM playoff preview I’ve read so far has the Sharks listed as finishing 3rd on the PK for the season. The fuck? (So, you can always point to those and feel better!)
Actually, andrew, once we reached the #1 spot, we stayed there until the end. But I’ll admit we didn’t start there. Maybe 99.9% is stretching it a little.
But I checked the PK stats pretty much every day.
…every MSM playoff preview I’ve read so far has the Sharks listed as finishing 3rd on the PK for the season.
They probably wrote them 2 weeks before the end of the season. They tend to do that. :D
Psh….Jody Shelley is certainly no angel, but Otter’s a dickhead too.
At least Otter didn’t drag people around by the jersey and beat up refs trying to get to some Sharks winger that wasn’t part of the scrum.
“At least Otter didn’t drag people around by the jersey and beat up refs trying to get to some Sharks winger that wasn’t part of the scrum.”
Haha, yeah. I know, I know…that’s why I added the qualifier. I don’t defend Shelleys actions out there, as he can get a little out of control sometimes. I’m just saying that Ott does that kind of stuff too.
And hey, at least the Stars didn’t pull Turco out of fear that a Sharks player was going to take a run at him!
And hey, at least the Stars didn’t pull Turco out of fear that a Sharks player was going to take a run at him!
Yeah, Turco can take care of himself.
That reason actually didn’t even occur to me when I was at the game. I thought it was a dig from Wilson, basically saying the Stars weren’t going to bother them with any goals, so why not rest him?
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Ott start whaling on a guy who hasn’t dropped his gloves. I could be wrong, though. (He gets that a lot, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen him do it.) And I’m talking about punching somebody repeatedly, not the pushing and shoving, getting-a-free-one kind of stuff. Cuz I have seen that. Heh.
“Yeah, Turco can take care of himself.”
Yeah, a stick swing to a guy’s face usually gets the job done.
“That reason actually didn’t even occur to me when I was at the game. I thought it was a dig from Wilson, basically saying the Stars weren’t going to bother them with any goals, so why not rest him?”
Nah, Wilson came out and said that he thought the Stars were gooning it up out there (with the hitting, not the fighting) and he was legitimately worried for Nabokov’s safety.
Oh, please. :D
By the way, in a post-game interview, a reporter asked Turco about Ott and he said, “Yeah, they hate him. And it’s not the WWE here. They really hate him.” (paraphrased)
I thought that was funny.
“a reporter asked Turco about Ott and he said, “Yeah, they hate him. And it’s not the WWE here. They really hate him.” (paraphrased)”
Haha! You know what that means, right Patty? You guys have your very own Sean Avery!
You take that back!
His own teammates like him, and he’s always a nice guy off the ice. So he’s no Sean Avery.
Seriously. Take it back.
You guys have your very own Sean Avery!
::cough:: Excuse me, but I believe if we’re comparing Ott and Avery, then Roenick at least should pop up somewhere in the discussion.
“Seriously. Take it back.”
I’ll think about it. But not very hard.
“…but I believe if we’re comparing Ott and Avery, then Roenick at least should pop up somewhere in the discussion.”
Psh…Roenick was nominated for the Masterton! He’s a good guy now Caitlin….come on, you know he’s the feel good story of the season!
Psh…Roenick was nominated for the Masterton! He’s a good guy now Caitlin….come on, you know he’s the feel good story of the season!
He may have all of you fooled, but not me! NOT ME!
I’d really rather Roenick doesn’t pop up in conversations. That way I can pretend he retired.

I just find the humor in pointing fingers at Ott when you’ve got JR on your team, andrew. ;)
That being said, I can’t believe you even made that comparison! Damn, andrew! That’s like your one, fatal flaw right there.
I just find the humor in pointing fingers at Ott when you’ve got JR on your team, andrew. ;)
Exactly! :D JR’s the ultimate Glass House.
(We should probably save some of this for the off-chance the Stars meet the Sharks in the playoffs. :D )
“Exactly! :D JR’s the ultimate Glass House.”
maybe we should throw stones!!! haha. that might be fun!!
(We should probably save some of this for the off-chance the Stars meet the Sharks in the playoffs. :D )
I sense a Team Stars Bloggers rising up against andrew. Sorry, dude. :D
Exactly! :D JR’s the ultimate Glass House.
From now on, I’m going to look at this man and call him Glass House. Seriously. Stuck forever.
maybe we should throw stones!!!
:^::::::::::
“(We should probably save some of this for the off-chance the Stars meet the Sharks in the playoffs. :D )”
You’d better save it. You’re going to need something when the Sharks finish your boys off in 5 games!
“Exactly! :D JR’s the ultimate Glass House.”
Dude! Have you guys even seen JR this year?
Ott: 73 games, 114 PIMs
Avery: 57 games, 154 PIMs
JR: 69 games, 26 PIMs
He doesn’t yap, he doesn’t fight, he doesn’t agitate….I’d say my comparison has a little more leg to stand on!
“I sense a Team Stars Bloggers rising up against andrew. Sorry, dude. :D”
I know. It’s cool. The playoffs bring it all out….all the nice feelings and mutual fandom goes in the shitter. That being said. I hope Ott gets Pronger to fly off the handle, earning a nice fat suspension in the process.
Suspension for Pronger, of course, in case I wasn’t clear….
Suspension for Pronger, of course, in case I wasn’t clear….
I gotcha. :D
He doesn’t yap, he doesn’t fight, he doesn’t agitate….
This season, he may not….I’m just looking at the sum of his career, you know. From 95-01 he consistently clocked over 100 penalty minutes a season with 65+ games played per season.
The playoffs bring it all out….all the nice feelings and mutual fandom goes in the shitter.
I still like you, andrew. :D I just don’t like the idea of your team beating mine, that’s all, and I’m sure the idea vice versa is the same for you.
Ott: 73 games, 114 PIMs
Avery: 57 games, 154 PIMs
JR: 69 games, 26 PIMs
I can’t speak for Caitlin, but I don’t think we meant that JR was like Ott. Just that he’s reprehensible in his own right.
I hope Ott gets Pronger to fly off the handle, earning a nice fat suspension in the process.
I kind of hope so too, except (a) Pronger is going to kill the next person that makes him fly off the handle and (b) his suspension (if there is one) won’t be fat.
Woops, Caitlin did mean that. And I’m sure when Ott is 50, his PIMs will be greatly reduced, too!
That’s right! I said it! :D
but I don’t think we meant that JR was like Ott. Just that he’s reprehensible in his own right.
This is more what I meant, but you can hold JR to a similar standard in a way, especially when it comes to Avery’s cheap-shotting.
Basically, I think it’s ironic to point fingers at an agitator like Ott, compare him to one of the dirtiest players in the league when Ott mainly draws penalties and when I don’t see dirty play out of him like I do Avery, when you’ve got JR, who’s notorious for dirty hits and just generally being an ass.
Does that make sense? Or did I hit the crack pipe especially hard?
That makes sense, Caitlin. And I think you’re hitting the crack pipe just right. :P
“And I’m sure when Ott is 50, his PIMs will be greatly reduced, too! ”
Now that is funny.
And people, I’m not defending JR for any period of time other than this season. I know he was an idiot for most of his career, and one season of being a decent guy doesn’t make up for that. But, I am glad that he pulled himself together and stop being a douchebag when he came to the Sharks. This season there is no comparision between Ott and JR. In the past, yes.
And of course, Avery is a toolbag of the most epic proportions. I know Ott isn’t as bad as he is….but I know he’s hated around the league, much like Avery (just like your Turco quote points out, Patty!), and for many of the same reasons (minus the racial slurs). You don’t get that kind of rep by playing squeaky clean.
So, I propose we drop it. It’s clear (to me) that JR’s a mouthy jerk and Ott is an asswipe. I know you guys agree with at least half of that statement!
I’m not defending JR for any period of time other than this season.
Oh, I know you’re not defending him fully, you know. Just making an observation.
So, I propose we drop it.
Heh, I agree to disagree with you, San Jose Caitlin. :D
And I’m surprised by his non-media hogging this year, so I’ll give JR some props for that, too. I guess if you don’t give people a chance to change, they won’t try to. :D
And thanks to the Sharks for helping him out with that.
It’s clear (to me) that JR’s a mouthy jerk and Ott is an asswipe. I know you guys agree with at least half of that statement!
Hee!
We need to put our differences aside and band together to will the Ducks out of the playoffs. :D
“Heh, I agree to disagree with you, San Jose Caitlin. :D”
“We need to put our differences aside and band together to will the Ducks out of the playoffs. :D”
Yes, yes. And lest we forget what’s really important here? The Kings were 29th with barely over 78%. Now THAT is awesome. Heh, stupid Kings.
The Kings were 29th with barely over 78%. Now THAT is awesome. Heh, stupid Kings.
Hahahaha!
(Poor Kings.)
Hey Patty and Caitlin, thanks for defending my little ice troll!
Also, the Sharks usurping the Stars’ Penalty Kill throne is a complete and total outrage and really big bummer, too. :(
Also, the Sharks usurping the Stars’ Penalty Kill throne is a complete and total outrage and really big bummer, too. :(
Hopefully, some success in the playoffs will help us get over it. :D
“…some success in the playoffs will help us get over it.”
That will help a lot of us get over a lot of things!
“I sense a Team Stars Bloggers rising up against andrew. Sorry, dude. :D”
Haha yes. Add another to the list! :P Behave yourself there, andrew. ;)
And I’ll add my two cents in, too. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Otter is NOT a goon.
The Hubbie read this last night and said Steve Ott is not a goon. He is like a pesky little brother who won’t leave you alone.
“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Otter is NOT a goon.”
“The Hubbie read this last night and said Steve Ott is not a goon. ”
Hey, I never said Ott’s a goon. I did call him a dickhead. Oh yeah, and an asswipe. But I didn’t specifically call him a goon. He’s not, he’s a pest. Just like Avery!
Oh! I said it!
Oh! I said it!
andrew, I’m going to take back that Bloodsport review! You’d better watch it, mister!
“andrew, I’m going to take back that Bloodsport review! You’d better watch it, mister!”
Haha, Caitlin, you’re totally Patty’s goo….I mean enforcer! Way to stand up for your fellow fans!
I would leave incendiary comments on your blog too, but you have it set up only for those with google IDs. Gotta keep the riff-raff out, I suppose.
Well a large part of that has to do with Jeffy leaving and our PK plummeting without him in March. We had a healthy lead before that.
amy
I would leave incendiary comments on your blog too, but you have it set up only for those with google IDs. Gotta keep the riff-raff out, I suppose.
Well, I need to fix that, then. Can’t you log in as OpenID on Hockey Coma? (Sorry, it automatically logs me in through gmail, so I never pay attention, ha.)
You’re not riff-raff…I suppose.
“Can’t you log in as OpenID on Hockey Coma?”
Nah, google ID only. Apparently it’s a very exclusive blog!
“You’re not riff-raff…I suppose.”
haha, thanks…but yes. Yes I am.
Nah, google ID only. Apparently it’s a very exclusive blog!
I’ll switch the settings this evening so you can comment. Of course, now this means you’re BEHOLDEN TO COMMENT, since I’m going to all this damn trouble for you. :p
haha, thanks…but yes. Yes I am.
Hmph!
“Of course, now this means you’re BEHOLDEN TO COMMENT, since I’m going to all this damn trouble for you. :p”
Oh…you’ll get comments all right.
Prepare to DEFEND YOURSELF!!!
Prepare to DEFEND YOURSELF!!!
You killed my father. Prepare to die.
:P
“You killed my father. Prepare to die.”
HA! Nice one Patty.
It turns out the Stars are only mostly dead.
It turns out the Stars are only mostly dead.
Jeez, where’s Billy Crystal when you need him?
