I’m not sure what to think so far. I was okay with losing the first game of the season, and I was thrilled they bounced right back. But now I’m not sure what to think.
I’d like to say that the ice looked terrible. The puck was bouncing all over the place, the players were over-skating it while trying to carry it, the passes after the first couple of minutes of each period were barely making it across the ice, but the first passes of the period were too hard because they were still compensating for the slow ice.
I’m not blaming Nashville’s arena. For Pete’s sake it’s 90 degrees today here in Dallas. Our ice is going to be bad for a while, too. It’s just unfortunate that the ice was bad. The Preds may have been handling that fact better, but I was not paying too close attention to their passes and puck-carrying. I did notice that both teams looked like they were really struggling to skate.
All that said, it was still not a good game by us. Mike Smith could probably put in a better game than that one. There were some almost-goals, but sadly, those don’t count.
Kris Barch looked pretty good. He picked a fight with Jordin Tootoo on his first shift of the game. As he was leaving the ice, Stephane Robidas skated over and said something to him. Daryl Reaugh interviewed Robidas during the first intermission and asked about the fight. Robidas said that Barch had really wanted to get Tootoo the last time they played Nashville (the game after the one where Tootoo suckerpunched Robidas), but the coaches wouldn’t let him because they wanted the win. So it sounds like Barch had been stewing about that all summer. I know I say this about all the players eventually, but I really love Stephane Robidas.
I’m not panicking yet, of course. I’m probably the only one. Most I hear around here thought we’d miss the playoffs last season.
I hope the one-note press around here is pissing them off will make them want to prove themselves. We get it that they didn’t sign an offensive superstar! WE GET IT! I dare you to think of another question!
On a lighter note, I thought this commercial was funny:
