Things have been pretty dull around here, what with all the lack of hockey and everything.
At first I kind of enjoyed the relief of nothing going on. Nothing I can do about Crawford now. Last season is gone, no getting it back. It was relaxing.
But now I’m getting the itch again pretty bad. August is infuriating me by just plodding along at a snail’s pace, with a constant 98-and-sunny forecast. I never liked August, even as a kid. It’s too hot, for one thing, and there are no holidays. When I was in school it was the last month of summer vacation — it was the equivalent of Sunday night. It’s hard to enjoy it knowing what’s just around the corner. Plus it was too hot.
Now that I’m a hockey fan, I am not sure which I look forward to most. Hockey, because it means cool weather, or cool weather, because it means hockey.
I’m also kind of bandwagoning the Texas Rangers this summer. It’s mostly because I miss watching sports, but it’s a little because they’re winning and because they don’t have any jerks on the team this season. I’m really pulling for them to make the playoffs. I want them to see that pitching and defense are what they’ve needed all along and that home runs alone are for losers. And I think Ian Kinsler looks a lot like James Neal. And I love Kinsler’s pants. And Holland’s curveball. Okay, that’s enough about baseball.
Another thing that has got me thinking about the new season is the series of player profiles that the great Mike Heika is running. If you haven’t been following them, you should. I agree with him probably 99% of the time.
Thinking about the boys actually playing is helping a lot. It’s hard to picture what this season is going to be like after all the changes, so it’s taking me some time to get back into the swing. I’m going to miss Dave Tippett in a big way and I am betting that the feel of the team is going to change a lot with him gone. I just don’t know what it’s going to change to.
If Crawford doesn’t screw things up, and if the main guys can stay healthy, and if they keep Fistric up here where he should be, I think this could be a pretty good season. Training camp is right around the corner.
